Mannings Sports; James Manning managed the successful ladies and gent’s hairdressing and tobacco sales business of Mr M.Good from the premises of 160 Mann St Gosford until December 1929 when fire destroyed the building. At that time it was rebuilt for a cost of 2000 pounds.
On April 12 1930 James purchased the business from Mrs Good and in the spring of 1932 moved it to its current location at the newly built premises of 172 Mann St Gosford, where he continued hairdressing and tobacco sales. James was well respected in town and known for his generosity and fairness.
At 15 years old James son Kevin started working fulltime as an apprentice hairdresser and soon found that this was not his calling. It was then decided to expand the business to Fishing, Firearms, Sporting Goods and Toys. At that time the majority of stock arrived by rail or picked up in Sydney.
During the post depression years stock was extremely difficult to obtain so James or Kevin would get in the trusty old Holden Ute and head to Sydney to scour the big smoke for any stock they could get their hands on especially tobacco this would be a weekly occurrence.
Sadly at the age of 70 in the year 1976 James passed away and Kevin continued the running of the business until he retired in the year 2000 at the age of 72 after 57 years in the family business. Kevin was honoured to be presented with an Australia Day award in 2000 for his contribution to the business community. Kevin lives locally today and takes an active interest in his daughter Sue’s running of the business.
